Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

This was another image from the 2009 Gurren Lagann calendar that just makes a perfect wallpaper---after a little tweaking. I had to re-do Nia's veil since it was transparent and contained parts of the original background. I wanted the whole thing to have a soft look overall, and that strongly depended on keeping the colors soft. I vectored the star shapes from a piece of stock and turned them into brushes for the subtle background. The higher resolutions are in PNG format!

I scanned this image from the 2009 Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann calendar, and it was my personal favorite for the year as Kinon and Rossiu are an adorable couple. The fall foliage in the background is also a plus. Had to take this apart to get a good scan of it, but it was worth it. After that, just some re-CGing and it was a perfect desktop!

The original drawing for this wallpaper had a very rough look, with lines that looked like they were drawn on a textured pastel board. And while I didn't copy the lines exactly--I wanted a smoother look for the wallpaper--I did keep it a little rough ;D So everything was vectored and colored, and I added textures to different parts of the background, so it wouldn't be completely uniform. I also emulated a lightly painted look for the blue sky part of the background. While true to the original, it's definitely not the same.

There are a lot of really uniquely drawn versions of Yoko in the portrait collection, but this one by far is the most colorful and all about wild. I re-colored the scan and extended the image vertically this time by drawing additional bits, for those of you out there on 4:3 resolutions. It was time consuming, but you can't beat Yoko in nurse's costume... Or can you? XD

After perusing the Yoko Portraits art book, I decided to start out walling this one. Because I scanned it, I had to fix the shadow and blur from the book binding in the middle, and then re-colored the whole image for the crisp look you see. And for those of you using widescreen, I added an additional 300px to the drawing so I wouldn't have to crop any of Yoko. It looks pretty convincing :D

I need to catch up with more new shows, especially awesome ones like Gurren Lagann. I traced the majority of the elements of this wallpaper from screen shots and just combined it all to go together. The sketch-like cartoon motion lines were an original touch from me, as I scribbled with a pen and scanned it to make the effect.
